Fediverse@lemmy.world•FR#153 – What does a Discord replacement look like?English
1·1 day agoI am still on hold.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•FR#153 – What does a Discord replacement look like?English
1·1 day agoI can assure you here that the majority here will always want federation in anything even if it makes the sign-up process more complicated slightly to new users. For many reasons.
And sure, features also matter. If they didn’t, then Matrix would be already winning here.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•FR#153 – What does a Discord replacement look like?English
2·2 days agoWhy? You could always self-host a federated Discord alternative and not federate it with anywhere else if you wanted it like that. You can use it like that and others can utilise its federation functions. Why is Federation presumably desirable for you when it comes to Lemmy but not Discord?
Federation is necessary here for long-term resistance to corporate greed and decline. It isn’t a selling point specifically for the individual user experience here.

2·2 days agoNo audio/screen sharing, incredibly basic community or “space” customisation tools. No roles.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•FR#153 – What does a Discord replacement look like?English
1·2 days agoSame reason the Fediverse does. Because a would-be piece of software can’t scale without it. If each instance is entirely disconnected, then you can’t jump between different communities on them without new accounts. This depresses growth. Your average would-be Discord instance host is unlikely to be able to scale up to any meaningful size to be a large host, and nor would that be desirable anyway as its just a form of centralisation to begin with.

4·2 days agoStoat have not designed their platform to federate and aren’t interested.

1·2 days agoYeah, if that can develop further and some people start to take it up - it could become more of a thing.

81·2 days agoI mean Stoat and Root just do not have that problem. They look like Discord.
All that we need is that but federated.
Also Matrix lacks key Discord-like features in terms of voice chat, screen sharing etc.

131·2 days agoWe need a damn federated Discord! Stoat and Root are bandaids until they either shut down themselves or degrade.
Do NOT reply to me with Matrix. It’ll be a federated Discord when it actually gets some uptake for more than just Fediverse instance rooms.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Is it just me has there been a lot of Spam and abuse on Lemmy lately?English
16·5 days agoAt least they don’t have shit like this there. Spam like this gets squashed quickly there.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Is there any service that provide a community growth chart on lemmy?English
1·13 days agoDoesn’t Mbin measure this for communities you moderate?
Possibly the urls in the image that made it objectionable

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Piefed monthly user activity has increased by nearly 500 in 3 days.English
1·13 days agoNo, it’s not. It’s referring to people grievance-mongering about the code and making it their life goal to try and attack piefed - many of whom disagreed with it at the onset.
Did you actually think you were going to somehow convince me to oppose Piefed, or something?
I have no control over someone else advertising the Fediverse purely by means of specifically focusing on Piefed. They didn’t start any flame war specifically by doing that.
I use compact on Piefed. It’s a click in settings. I don’t think this really means anything.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Piefed monthly user activity has increased by nearly 500 in 3 days.English
1·14 days agoI’m saying they shouldn’t be surprised when no one wants to discuss things with someone who specifically said they don’t want anything to do with them.
Right, and the feeling is mutual. I don’t think it really matters how Piefed looked, or what it does - many of those users outright oppose any competing platform on the Fediverse because they believe you should help the Lemmy devs instead of making your own. So what’s the end-game here?
Which also goes back to the language rimu uses when questioned.
He’s clearly referring to the people who express what he views as bad faith commentary and attacks on his character from those instances and communities.
Again are you pr for piefed cause you are way to invested in defending it, doing best to distract from the actual points and issues brought up and seemly instantly responding.
You keep replying to me. I reply back. I pretty much reply to everyone if I have something else to say so long as you keep replying to me.
Yes, but it just isn’t used in more casual ways. If I wanted to sit in Fediverse meta chatrooms and chatrooms for a bunch of clients and open source projects then Matrix is for me, but that’s not what people want out of Discord alternatives.
