They’re not telling people to give up wanted pets. They’re saying if you’re putting your pet to sleep anyway, give it to them.

In that case, the same logic applies when the shelter is full / has to make space for new animals. Trust me, there’s never enough room in a shelter.
Congrats, you’ve either condemned it to a more painful death or increased the workload of the local animal control.
