I love genuine questions and people putting in the effort to love and understand each other better. If you come at me just wanting to argue I’m going to troll you back. FAFO.

  • yes, screw the quadriplegics so you can feel good about staying on your moral high ground. Your hill to live and die on takes much higher priority than people who can’t shift their own body weight developing holes in their ass I can fit my fist in but still not be able to see the bone because it’s covered in maggots. Yeah there need to be guardrails in place to keep him from doing silly shit with it and make sure it’s affordable for the people who need it, but a) the technology is still in it’s infancy b) how about you put all this piss and vinegar towards political action to beef up the FDA (who are already regulating this situation per the linked article?). While you’re at it the CDC could use a little more money and public backing too. How about you go out into the world and encourage people to trust scientific institutions more? There are about a thousand different ways you could be expressing these morals in a way that actually helps people instead of just making you feel better about yourself.

  • For a technology that could someday help a quadriplegic interact with the world fully and independently again I’m willing to tolerate some hitches. There’s a reason they didn’t pick some full on walkie talkie for their first human trial, and there’s a reason that kid looked motherucking hyped to have brand new technology that he’s the first human to even try installed directly into his fucking brain. The problem is abled people thinking this is fundamentally for them. Bby no, they’re trying to help people walk again, even if the legs are robots. You’re looking at the wrong risk-benefit profile.

My suspicion is that it’s supposed to be a prion which is a misfolded protein that causes other proteins to also misfold which eventually just makes a giant mess of your brain and kills you, similar to how a badly executed pivot table might crash your computer. The obvious difference is that we can’t reboot your brain. The closest we’ve gotten is probably ECT, but even that’s just mostly an in-joke between me and my coworkers about it just dumping all your neurotransmitters out so they can be marie-kondo-ed back into the right places.

  • Fun fact: this is exactly what’s happening in Healthcare right now! I feel like every other week I have to explain basic concepts to my newer coworkers, and it’s not even their faults because admin is basically having them all train each other. Most new nurses these days are lucky to be trained by another nurse who has more than a full year of experience. And the resident doctors make all kinds of mistakes literally just because residency is basically hazing to the extent that they force them to work back to back to back nights vs days without adequate time to shift their circadian rhythms properly, so they’re relying on a new nurse trained by a slightly less new nurse to catch errors by a doctor who is also relatively new but most importantly has gotten 2 hours of sleep out of the last 72. I highly recommend getting in shape and wearing your seatbelt because whoever you think is going to save you after you get catapulted across 3 lanes of a crowded highway is becoming more likely to just kill you faster and more painfully every year.

  • Right like this is a mixed bag. I feel like my YouTube shorts addiction is fucking my attention span and I need to get back to watching long form stuff but like also a) fedi isn’t going to have server space for much else and b) it’ll bring the user base fedi will need to grow and maybe have the server space someday.

My other thought is that maybe things like peertube need more communities around streaming where the video isn’t saved, at least by default. This could also be a better direction for the internet as a whole; moving away from this idea that every single moment of everything must be recorded for posterity. The internet really does need more liminal spaces. I really liked the aether model but that guy abandoned the project and lemmy is here now anyway. It would be cool maybe to have a lemmy instance where everything is auto-deleted after 6 months and at least puts out requests to also delete on other servers.

  • 100% to all of this. I’m also finding as far as the mental health area specifically, we need more male therapists and inpatient workers to model healthy behaviors for some of the younger men (and the older ones, they’re just less likely to listen). I’ve found the most success in empowering the men I know who do have it together because they know better what needs to be said and often if there is misogyny at play the patient is less likely to listen to me saying the exact same thing anyway. So in addition to being a complex issue, it’s also one that takes men themselves to solve.

I also LOVE that you said “Tate et al,” not because I think he says anything worthy of wiping my ass on, but just because I love the air of scholarship it added to a topic I often innately associate with some of the seedier parts of the internet, but that really does deserve more of a place in both mainstream and academic discussion.

This is me every single gotdamn night I work. Everything will be fine then BAM the patient who constantly pees everwhere is logrolling down the hall coating the entire communal area in urine because no one would give them a hug while they’re covered in pee. The worst part is I’m not even describing any particular patient. If I had a dollar every time a hall is convered in some kind of bodily fluid or other excretion I’d be making 3-5 cents more hourly which is coincidentally the exact size of my last raise.
