  • I haven’t had a problem.

iPhone with Screen time and communication limits means I can control how much time they spend in the device and in which apps and I control who they can contact.

Don’t approve any apps that allow social features.

Talk to them about the realities of the internet and the wider world.

All of this has to happen at some point. If you just hand off a phone to an 11 year old or even a 14 year old workout doing any of the above, you’re still going to have issues.

Much of what is being said about tech is the same as was said about tv and video games. The only studies you’re going to hear about this are the ones that confirm the societal biases.

If you don’t seek counter opinions of this topic you’re playing into the same fear mongering every generation of parents has had about the new thing.

Dancing, rock and roll, tv, video games, and now phones. Every time, everyone thinks this time is different and every time it hasn’t been.

  • Misinformation is always worse in the long run.

If people find out you knowingly lied about one thing, they’ll assume you lied about other things that are more important, regardless of evidence.

Climate change being an excellent example of this where it wasn’t so much lies as bad guesses and so many people dismissed it despite the growing evidence.

  • Not that these extreme scenarios are always told from the perspective of the idiot that survived despite not using a seatbelt.

First responders and ER doctors disagree on these accounts. Vehicles are literally designed to collapse around the passengers. That doesn’t work if the seatbelt isn’t keeping them in the safety zone.

  • That might be their internal reasoning but Apple will very quickly move to have these capabilities in house. Apple has been working on machine learning for a while but they don’t collect data so they are unable to build these LLMs.

For now it makes sense for Apple to leave the liability of basing these LLMs on copyrighted data. If OpenAI losses those court battles, they take the hit for services rendered to Apple. None of that liability transfers to Apple.

Meanwhile, Apple is going about this the Apple way by encouraging developers to integrate their apps into new frameworks being added. This gives them access to user data directly from the source allowing them to build personalized models.

These models will likely be far more useful to the day to day mundanity of life than the hallucinogenic encyclopedia that is ChatGPT.
