So, what happens when the sensor telling you the oil level fails? A dipstick is extremely unlikely to ever fail to work correctly, so…?
HelixDab2@lemm.eeto Technology@lemmy.world•New Cars Don't All Come With Dipsticks Anymore, Here's WhyEnglish3·2 months agoYou can use DOT 5.1 to significantly increase that wet boiling point, but it’s expensive for normal car use. I usually use it in my motorcycle, since I’ve experienced brake fade on that before, and it’s… Not fun.
HelixDab2@lemm.eeto Technology@lemmy.world•New Cars Don't All Come With Dipsticks Anymore, Here's WhyEnglish10·2 months agoDepends on how much you drive, and what the recommended interval is. If the interval is 7k miles, and you drive 18k in a year, yeah, you need to change the oil 3x/year.
It seems to me that counting the number of cycles each makes, and basing your intervals off that would make more sense than mileage. If I’m constantly running at high RPM, that should require more frequent oil changes in terms of mileage.
I have noticed that ICE usually wants to conduct their splashy raids in areas with very low gun ownership, e.g., NYC, Boston, etc.

If I’m buying some of the very best match-grade ammunition I can get (Hornady 168gr ELD-M) at $2.15/round, that works out to a maximum of $2580. Which ain’t chump change, but is still about $397,420 short of $400,000.
HelixDab2@lemm.eeto Games@lemmy.world•What are some good examples of "Where the fuck do you go" kind of games?English2·2 months agoI would love to see a complete remake of Daggerfall with the same randomly generated dungeons; I’m not sure that the random landscape and dungeon generation would work with the way games are programmed now though.
Come to think of it, re-doing Morrowind, Arena, Battlespire, and Redquard would be neat, too.
HelixDab2@lemm.eeto Technology@lemmy.world•Slate, a customizable EV pickup for $20kEnglish1·3 months agoUnfortunately most commercial farms aren’t putting in what they’re taking out, even with the industrial fertilizers. Most of the industrial fertilizers are just nitrogen, potassium, and phosphates, often as a liquid. You are absolutely right that you can’t take and never return; that’s why in pre-industrial revolution times, people would rotate fields between crops, and lying fallow/being used for grazing (where sheep, cattle, etc. were leaving free fertilizer) You also ended up with fewer years where all your crops got wiped out by a single pest, because you weren’t farming just one thing. Efficiency in farming–esp. monoculture–is great for profits, not so great for the land itself.
Good news is that good water treatment plants will pull phosphate out of the waste water.
Eh. High levels of phosphates end up running off fields into waterways, and then you get things like algae blooms. Waste water treatment plants will clean up runoff that goes into the sewers and storm drains, but it’s not really cleaning up entire rivers. IIRC, that used to be a much more significant problem; I remember water in rivers near where I grew up–which was all surrounded by farms–often had white, sludgy scum anywhere that the current was forming eddies. If I remember correctly the high levels of that white shit was due to worse regulations governing agricultural run-off.

Gotta say, this should be a huge red flag for everyone. Soil quality is declining sharply, and fertilizers simply aren’t making up the difference. Switching to robots farming will almost certainly accelerate this.
HelixDab2@lemm.eeto Technology@lemmy.world•Slate, a customizable EV pickup for $20kEnglish1·3 months agoUse some Rokset on all your fasteners; the only way to break the threadlocker is with heat, and heat would also destroy the bodywork. So you could still replace damaged panels, but you couldn’t steal them.

It’s not great for carpets, but it’s fast and easy for hardwood floors.
Would I have bought it if it needed to connect to my cell phone? Absofuckinglutely not. Not in a million fucking years. It could have been the best goddamn vacuum in the world at sucking, powered by a miniature black hole, sucking dirt to the event horizon, and I still would have passed.
I need LESS connectivity in my life, not more.
Windows 11 LTSC
I’m using Window 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC; the biggest issue I’ve had was that I couldn’t get my video card installed. I had to wait until there was an updated driver, a few weeks after I assembled my computer. Every time I tried to install the driver that was supposed to be the correct one, I got a BSOD.
Honestly, I like 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC better than I liked the 10 Pro version that I had. And–compared to the only Linux distro I’ve used, Tails–it’s fairly straightforward. And yes, I know the Tails is kind of a pain in the ass, and it’s not fair to judge all of Linux against that. But i’m old, and cranky, and just want Win 3.11 back.

“Magnetic Therapy is based on the premise that all living organisms exist in a magnetic field, including the human body. The human body generates its own magnetic field. Therefore, the body can heal itself when electromagnetic energy is in balance.”
It’s like those stupid magnet bracelets and elbow wraps, only for your vagina. It’s all woo.
You may not smell bad immediately after going to the gym, but if you leave your sweaty gym clothes in the bag to ferment overnight, they’re gonna smell like a dehydrated cat pissed in your bag.
It sounds like potential guards have to have combat experience or significant police experience. So it’s probably not something the average person is going to be able to do.
OTOH, a single bodyguard mercing their protectee would nuke the whole company, which would be pretty funny.
…Or one of the guards has a family member kidnapped and held unless they oopsie, looked the wrong way.
