The most important aspect is motivation to improve and do cool shit. That can, also, be said about a lot of professions. The best thing you can do is to find what is most interesting to you and spend at least a few hours a week learning about it or engaging with it. It could be new features of a language you know, a programming methodology that is new to you, learning about/contributing to a FOSS project you like, or anything else.

School and work will almost definitely force you to engage with the parts of development you don’t like, as well will give you an opportunity to engage with the parts of development you do like. It’s on you to keep yourself engaged and improving in your skills.

I think part of the issue is that it does act more like a search engine crawler than a traditional user. A lot of sites rely on real human traffic for revenue (serving ads, requests to sign up for Patreon, using affiliate links, etc) that gets bypassed by these bots. Hell in some cases the people running the sites are just looking for interaction. So while there is a spike in traffic, and potentially cost, the people running these sites aren’t getting the benefit of that traffic.

Basically these have the same issues as the summaries that Google does in their search results but, potentially, have much larger impact on the host’s bandwidth

It’s already here. I know someone who drank the Flavor-Aid and within the past year he’s starting using the T-slur and blamed Somalis when I offhandedly asked why traffic was so bad in a certain part of town (while there is a high Somali population here, the traffic problem is 100% poor city planning).

I’m getting daily or near daily BSODs since switch back from Debian. I was okay with Vista and 8, and maybe I’m just getting crankier as I get older, but I definitely am not a fan of the current direction Windows is taking.

Dreamweaver is still used? I used it a bit back in the day when Macromedia was around and shortly after Adobe got a hold of it. How does it work with the modern web? Does it work well with modern programming languages or is it still just a WYSIWYG HTML editor?

Kinda to glad I was able to move up my plans to build a new PC right when I heard we actually went through with the tariff plan.

I feel like I missed part of the article where it said that the current administration was planning on distributing this medal. What I read was more along the lines of them saying that the current administration is potentially implementing some pronatalist policies and the it describes one policy promoted by a pronatalist group, but nothing about the current administration planning on implementing that specific policy.

Not saying any of this is good and I tend to mentally gloss over parts of text that I read, I’m just earnestly missing where it says that specific policy is one that is being looked into and I would appreciate someone pointing it out to me.

Part of me is wanting to put that new PC build I just started saving for on a credit card instead.

I understand sentiment after seeing how a lot of tech companies are. The other side of it is this: Developers still have bills to pay. FOSS projects are great, especially if they’re done by a small team and have a supportive community, but there are only a limited number of developers who have a combination of knowledge, skill, free time, and financial capability to truly dedicate themselves to FOSS projects.

If I could support myself by coding for FOSS projects, I would probably try (hell I just might not be aware of opportunities for this) but that isn’t the reality in front of me.

They’ll see the sales of the Charger tank and will conclude that people just don’t want muscle cars, which is sad because in the next few years I was thinking about getting one.

Oh well, what can you do.

See, I’ve had a similar experience getting games to run on Debian. Steam games crash and require research and testing to see if I can even get them to run, having some in-game videos just not play, black screens, and games just kinda freezing are all super common for me. That’s just when trying to run games via Proton.

I get some of it can be tied to a skill issue on my part, but at the end of the day I’m tired and don’t want to spend what little free time I have tinkering to get a game working, at least most days.

Still, my dislike for Windows 11 outweighs my interest in gaming so Debian stays.

I opted out of the ability to have kids and am in a long term relationship with no intent to marry, unless a legal reason suddenly appears. I’m in my late 30’s and have I do have many friends who have gone down this route, some are more mature, successful, and/or happy than I am and some are not.

I’m a big advocate of those things not being a thoughtless choice, but something that a person takes a long time to think about before they try for either one. I’ve met way too many people who either, while they love their kid(s), don’t like how their life turned out because of them or are miserable in their marriages and will likely get a divorce.

Yeah, if I leak it’s usually some kind of liquid.
