Oh dang, it was my media PC until 2017, when the switch took over its role, IIRC. Definitely got my money’s worth out of it even if there were no games lmao

8·7 months agoIn case you didn’t see the trick further down the thread - you have to make sure to install the windows version of the game that runs with proton. Then you can connect to online matches. Installing the linux version is a trap; frankly, they should just delist it at this point.

2·7 months agoAfter having watched it (it was good, watched it with the buddy who had the idea and without telling him why we were watching it, he had a laugh the first time it happened), if you found it a real struggle, definitely don’t read this article about a real company that made a brain implant for epileptics and went under of which the episode heavily reminded me.
Bothered me significantly in the will they/won’t they dynamic of The Office.

31·7 months agoLol, I want to believe it was someone who wanted to slow the spread of this concept in the world, lashing out against it the only way they could.
That said I’ve def bookmarked that episode for watching. I lost track of Black MIrror, it’s a bit tough in that it’s so grim that each episode doesn’t really leave you wanting to watch the next one in my experience. But it’s had some bangers.

561·7 months agoBuddy had the nightmarish idea a while back with all the new generative ai stuff for video chat services injecting ads using the faces/voices of the participants in lieu of payment. Just, regularly-schedule ad breaks in your call where “your friend” suddenly starts talking about how excited they are about Raid: Shadow Legends
Yeah youse just gotta tie a string to the pin so’s it’s safe to remove

4·7 months agoWell, back in the day cigarette companies paid to be in the movies. This timeline puts it back to the very first “talkies” cigarette companies were already shouldering their way in and making sure that they were associated with sex and cool. Everyone was smoking on screen because films were big tobacco ads.

1·8 months agoOh jeeze, that’s been around as a plugin in inkscape since at least 2011, I remember vectorizing an episode poster from Adventure Time using it. But I’d believe it wasn’t quite as good as whatever photoshop had. I used the “never learn photoshop” trick to be happy with what I’ve got, but then I only edit images for fun.

Greentext@sh.itjust.works•Anon's little cousin plays with MLP toys
5·9 months agoCan confirm. I remember my seeing a first “hey, did you guys by any chance happen to see the new episode” post on /b/ back in 2010, quickly followed by it exploding on 4chan and people setting up the first pony tf2 servers, moot creating /pony/ as a containment board, and everyone saying “don’t post on /pony/ or you’ll get IP banned in two weeks” - because a decade prior, moot had created the /furry/ containment board when furries got big, let it sit for two weeks, then IP banned everyone who had posted to it and deleted it.
Of course, he didn’t replicate the action with /pony/, which is still around. And early brony culture was fascinating, because on a site where shock humor ruled and the experience was like digging through a sewer to find gems, suddenly a subculture emerged that was heavily anti-irony, kind, and genuine. Absolutely bizarre to watch.
Worth noting, as others have, that this was pre-gamergate, which was the social movement that took 4chan and turned it from a place that let Nazis post (usually “iRoNiCaLly” under the premise of being part of the ocean of piss that was the shock humor on /b/) and rolled it into a full Nazi bar.
The number of times I’ve broken this one out…
After having lived through it, if I never play a gritty brown bloom game again, it’ll be too soon.
Epileptic here: my e-bike is a godsend. That, and my city having at least decent bus infrastructure. With those two combined, even while I’m working on getting my license back, I don’t think I ever want to own a car again.

4·1 year agoLol, did you know it’s possible to make GUI applications for desktops that don’t use a browser as a platform? It’s a lost art, but at one time, it was how every application worked. Incredible, really

11·1 year agoYou can use bash in jupyter, yep, but I’m one of those nerds who dislikes the idea of using a web app for a shell, and it wouldn’t have the virtual filesystem implementation I mentioned. (This is an old thought for me I’ve just been too lazy to get around to)

Linux@lemmy.ml•In 2025, what features do you want in a terminal emulator? (that currently aren't widely available or at all)
231·1 year agoA jupyter-notebook like approach, in which commands and history are kept in previous boxes and show outputs in limited boxes and we stop limiting ourselves to pretending we’re still using teletypes but maintain the power pipes bring to unix. Also, all boxes are given filenames in a virtual fs that makes it easy to reference them or their output and treat them like a file, erasing the need to rerun a command to run something on its output because you forgot to save it.

My friends were very excitedly talking about setting up a corp in this when it was first announced.
They wanted my buy-in, and I asked if I could be head of HR, to which they said “yes”.
So I bought it, created our corp, and performed my ideal goal: set up a corp recruitment posting called “entry-level Star Citizen player” which required 10+ years in Star Citizen.
We’re now at the point where I have to find my log-in and change that to 20+ for the joke to make sense again.
