I’ve got an X220 as my secondary laptop, currently running Debian. It’s had several mods/upgrades and it’s still a very useful machine.

Technology@lemmy.world•Stepping Away from Streaming with the Innioasis Y1 Digital Audio PlayerEnglish
1·1 month agoEvery smartphone platform has media player apps available that can play locally stored media files. Seems a better idea to me to use the device already there just in a different way.
There’s also plenty of great media player hardware on the used market if people really must have a dedicated device for this.
I’m using Jellyfin with 2 Apple TV 4Ks, one newer and one older. As other commenters have said there is no complete official Jellyfin app for Apple TV.
Swiftfin is the in development new app for Apple platforms, but it still very incomplete. Basic video playback works, but there are a lot of missing features like music and live tv support. The interface is functional but still fairly crude, and in the current version there’s a lot of ugly overflow issues in the UI. Video playback has always been reliable for me though. It will improve as development progresses but for now it’s very much a work in progress.
The other option is Infuse, which has a much nicer and mature UI, but also isn’t fully feature complete for Jellyfin. It also a proprietary app with a subscription to unlock all features. I’ve tried the free version and it seems to work well enough, video playback was smooth.
I think there are few other small apps but I haven’t tried them.
I wish there were better options for clients as the Apple TV is the best streaming box I’ve found but the Jellyfin support could be better.

23·4 months agoBPAs have been shown to absorbed through the skin. Headphones are increasingly worn for long, continuous periods. Unlike other plastic objects which are handled for shorter periods.
I’m not entirely convinced of the danger myself (tinnitus seems a bigger worry for headphone use to me), but I thought it was a matter worthy of further discussion.

Technology@lemmy.world•Passive RFIDs can now stream telemetry data from sensorsEnglish
2·4 months agoMostly Zigbee. Depending on the sensor, location and activity I’m getting between 6-18 months per battery, but I do have a lot of sensor, so there’s a regular churn of batteries.

38·5 months agoIn a lot of cases “AI” is slapped on as marketing buzzword for anything with even a simple algorithm controlling it.
We got a new “AI” washing machine last month. As far as I can tell it the same as last years model just with some of the auto settings renamed to something AI.

History repeating itself again I guess.
UniFi Protect now has limited ONVIF support allowing various 3rd party cameras to work with Protect.
UniFi cameras can have RTSP enabled also, but it requires UniFi Protect to enable the setting.

Technology@lemmy.world•Meta’s Ray-Ban Display Glasses And The New GlassholesEnglish
21·9 months agoAn open source smart glasses platform would be a much better direction.
But that only provides security assurances for the wearer of the glasses. Anyone else interacting with them doesn’t know how they are configured, and what is being recorded and/or shared.

Technology@lemmy.world•Meta’s Ray-Ban Display Glasses And The New GlassholesEnglish
22·9 months agoThe core technology is impressive, and has legitimate use cases.
But that doesn’t outweigh the enormous privacy concerns these devices raise. They aren’t being angled as an accessory for specific activities, but as everyday wearables. If smart glasses like these became common they would be unavoidable, creating leave of intrusion that’s concerning even without Meta being involved.
Yup, the UK once again creating a needlessly convoluted and harmful solution to an already solved problem.
I would laugh if I didn’t live here.
The figures are the averages for the full trial period.
So it’s possible they were making more queries at the start of the trial, but then mostly stopped when if they found using Copilot was more a hindrance than a help.

I hadn’t heard of Moonfin before, it looks promising as an Apple TV client. Any pitfalls with it?
