  • Wasn’t referring to what Meta could do or even necessarily that there’s an issue with Lemmy’s software. More that there’s a bunch of servers with various configurations without resources dedicated to intrusion detection, mitigation or reporting. If something did happen at a server level to a hobbyist instance there’s no reason to believe users or maybe even the persons running the instance would know about it.

  • Probably. Not sure if this will do it. But there’s inherent privacy concerns in having a bunch of relatively insecure silos interoperating as a semi-social network even if most of us do so with varying degrees of anonymity. For the moment, most of us are here to avoid corporate overreach so motivations are in a certain degree of alignment. But it’s just a matter of time before something goes wrong or the winds change in an unforeseen way.

  • Ya know what was a foundational part of the American dream? Pensions. Ya know which employers still offer them? Counties, states and the federal government.

Private companies exist solely to make the people at the top very rich based on the stolen value of employee labor while dumping catastrophic losses in the public sphere. That’s capitalism in a nutshell.

You’d have to be unbelievably gullible, naive, traumatized AND brainwashed to be a diehard for a system like that. But, somehow they’ve managed it. A deluded nation of Amway top performers just one move away from making their own imaginary millions. All simping for the system.

  • Dihydrogen monoxide isn’t a good name for water, especially in this context. Hydroxic acid or hydrogen hydroxide make much more sense.
Water only splits into O2 and H2 under electrolysis, not due to acid/base chemistry. You have to be actively adding electrons. In solution, it dissociates into ion states as protons H+ and hydroxide OH-.
