Technology@lemmy.world•Framework supporting far-right racists?English
412·4 months agoI would say most of the customers of Framework are the kinds of people who espouse the kind of antifascist ideology that that guy that started the thread does.
I don’t think that the fascist sympathizer circle and the “willing to pay more money for an ethical laptop that isn’t beholden to a big corporation for repair” circles have much overlap.
This is easy, “Framework doesn’t support fascism or racism in any form. We support open source software and right to repair. Due to concerns with ideology in some of the projects we sponsor we are reviewing the projects we sponsor to make sure that they align with our values as a company.”
The fact that they aren’t willing to say so says plenty.

2·7 months agoUSB ssds seem to have a lot of weird issues being used for a nas drive. Sometimes its a power management thing on the SSD itself, sometimes its something odd with the USB controller on the host. Occasionally the power supply of the sff pc doesnt have enough amps for all of the peripherals. Using an intermediary like a usb hub makes all of these issues worse since you add another device with its own potential conflicts.
Not to say its not possible to do, but USB drives and NAS’s rarely play nice together.

Technology@lemmy.world•'Writing is on the wall for spinning rust': IBM joins Pure Storage in claiming disk drives will go the way of the dodo in enterprisesEnglish
1·11 months agoThe main point is that the disk controller gets exponentially more complicated as capacity increases and that the problem isnt with space for the nand chips bit that the controller would be too power hungry or expensive to manufacture for disks bigger than around 4tb.

I love that one too! Though my fave is Avianos. I’d love to see a UFO 50 more where they do some follow ups of some of these. Or open up modding or something.
If you like fedora as a base, you can install the Gnome version of fedora and install the Pop Shell. It has autotiling that you can turn on and off while you get used to it if you want. Its what I run on Nobara and it works perfectly fine for me.

Technology@lemmy.world•Why are so many leaders in tech evil?English
2·1 year agoMy thought is that these people think that their smarter than everyone else therefore they are justified doing anything they do. On the other hand, anyone with a billion dollars got it by making a whole lot of other people poorer. And they ate neither actually geniuses nor benevolent in any other way.
The Phillip Morris CEO makes money by hooking people onto something that isn’t good for them. Tech CEOs are very seldom any different. Anyone who says otherwise usually has a financial interest in making you believe them.
Maybe not that much more complicated, but it does give a less experienced user a lot more opportunities to make a mistake that could result in data loss or just a computer that suddenly decides not to boot Linux anymore since a Windows update broke grub.
The most important thing to do is backup your data to an external drive. Unless you are planning on dual booting (much more complicated) you will be wiping out the entire drive that has windows on it when you install Linux.
This guide goes through the whole installation process.
Mine is usually sheer horror at the prospect of getting that far and screwing up on an international stage. Secondhand anxiety is in the red zone.

Technology@lemmy.world•CrowdStrike broke Debian and Rocky Linux months ago, but no one noticedEnglish
14·2 years agoYou’re absolutely right. Everyone will be very worried and talk about the importance of security in the enterprise and yada yada yada until a cool new AI spreadsheet software comes out and everybody forgets to even check if their firewall is turned on.
But with that being said, if you have been looking for a good time to ask for cybersecuity funding at your org, see if you can’t lock down 5 years worth of budget while everyone is aware of the risk to their businesses.
