BYD Secretly Develops Humanoid Robot Codename 'Yao-Shun-Yu' as Auto Giants Race Into Embodied AI BYD, China's largest electric vehicle manufacturer, has confirmed it is secretly developing humanoid robots under a project codenamed "Yao-Shun-Yu." The revelation came from BYD Executive Vice President Li Ke in a recent interview, shedding light on the automaker's ambitions beyond electric vehicles and into the rapidly emerging field of embodied AI. The project was initiated in 2022 and operates under BYD's 15th Business Unit, which focuses on electronic integration and intelligence.

For people who are not aware, “Yao-Shun-Yu” are the first three (half-mythical) kings of China. They are famous for their altruism and kindness.

At this point, I am not even sure naming robots after human rulers is dystopian or not.

The only reason to make a robot humanoid is to fuck it. Every other use-case doesn’t need human limitations or complexity.

Why design hips, knees, ankles, coordination, and balance when wheels exist?

    Humanoid robots are a scam.

The world around us is shaped to serve the human figure. Steps, stairs, gaps between surfaces, ladders, and obstacles on the ground would be near impossible to navigate using wheels. Instead of changing the environment it’d be easier to make a humanoid robot that can navigate those things the same way we would.

Also every worker at foxconn etc has a shitload of cameras on them to train the models.

I saw a Chinese robot short on YouTube recently where the robot had hips and swayed while it walked. For a more “human like” gait

But did it make you want to fuck it? I bet it does for someone if not.

I wonder if Elon Musk is laughing his ass off about BYD making robots, like he did about their EV cars?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9ftbRWqkj0

In China BYD is now selling 5 times more EV cars than Tesla!!
    https://autovista24.autovistagroup.com/news/what-was-the-best-selling-ev-brand-in-china-in-2025/

Now Musk claims his stupid AI and Robots that aren’t even competitive today, will be worth billions or rather trillions in the future.
My guess is the competition will walk all over him in every field, because Tesla is lagging behind now even on EV where they had a solid head start. Elon Musk does not have a head start on robotics and AI, and I doubt Neither SpaceX (XAI) or Shitter (Grok) or Tesla (Optimus) will ever make a profit on any of their AI products.

Maybe BYD won’t either, but I give them a way better chance than anything Musk related.

It doesn’t matter to him, he’s a trillionaire. Thanks to fan boys, idiots, and government grift/corruption his stocks are more disconnected from reality than pretty much any other.

Basically a benchmark for modern chinese batteries, engines and machine learning. Would definetely look into how far they can take it.

I can see it, haha. Lemmy is about quality over quantity but I do miss the hot takes and the drama for hundreds, thousands replies.
